Storage Means Business

The Seagate SMB Blog Storage Means Business

How a Seagate hard drive can help give you a two-week vacation

I was chatting with Seagate’s Momentus XT product marketing manager Joni Clark the other day when I asked her, “So what’s the average difference in bootup time between a standard laptop drive and the current Momentus XT?”

“Standard 5,400 rpm will do it in 80 seconds while Momentus XT averages about 40 seconds,” she said.

The Momentus XT of course is Seagate’s Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) that combines SSD-like performance with affordable high-capacity (up to 500GB) hard drive storage for laptops, external backup and small form factor desktop PCs.

And the differences in bootup time Joni shared with me was certainly interesting.  So I started to think some more about what it all really means.

For a typical business user who may use a notebook at work for 5-days a week and just boots once per day, the savings in time is 200 seconds per week. That’s enough time to listen to an extra song in your car during your drive into work. Or watch a video on YouTube; perhaps you are interested in learning the fine art of cat massage from the massage cat lady (or just getting a good laugh). Or maybe you’d rather rock out and watch the Foo Fighters live at Apple’s iTunes Festival this past summer. That one’s cheating though as it runs about 270 seconds, but what can I say, I’m a fan so I’ll take the extra time.

Those 200 seconds per week translates to 800 seconds, or about 13.5 minutes per month. You could spend that time and keep in shape by jogging a mile.

Over the course of a year, the Momentus XT drive will have saved you 9,600 seconds in bootup time. That’s 160 minutes, or 2.67 hours. If you live in New York, you can take a flight to Florida and visit Miami Beach! Or stay home and watch most of either the Lord of the Rings, Braveheart, Dances with Wolves, or The Godfather.

In a decade, you’ll have saved 26.6 hours of time. That’s more than a full day of time saved – to do as you wish. Perhaps simple reflection and appreciation that you saved over a day of bootup time are in order?

And then, lastly, if we think of a typical career span of about 35 years, you’ll have saved 93.05 hours of time. That’s enough to have more than half a month saved that you could use to take a vacation in a tropical paradise.

Joni then offered a tease. “Just wait till you see what the NEXT generation will do. You won’t believe it.”

I can hardly wait! What would you do with the time Momentus XT saved you?
